Cuba holds local vote with a twist: 2 opposition candidates

A polling station's door is covered by voters lists ahead of municipal assembly elections in Havana, Cuba, Friday, April 17, 2015. At least two Cuban dissidents, Hildebrando Chaviano and Yuniel Lopez, are candidates in Sunday’s elections. Both men told The Associated Press that they expect to win the second round and become the first officials elected from outside the Communist Party since Fidel Castro imposed Cuba’s highly limited electoral system in 1976. (AP Photo/Desmond Boylan) HAVANA (AP) — Cuba is holding first local elections since a historic thaw in relations with the United States. And there's an unusual wrinkle in the single-party system: Two of the 27,000 candidates openly oppose the government.
