For some, prom is a platform for good deeds, social change

This April 7, 2015 photo shows Julia Hamilton dancing with Paul Rhodes at a prom that students held at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. The college students invited members of a local senior citizens center to attend the prom, and they danced to everything from big band music to R&B. The idea grew out of a prom that another student had attended when he was in high school that included both teenagers and senior citizens. It’s one of a number of examples of students using proms as a vehicle for good deeds or to promote social change. But prom culture is changing. Some teens now see prom as an opportunity to be inclusive rather than exclusive. They're using proms as vehicles for good deeds and to take a stand on issues that matter to them.
